Microwaves are our any-moment savior, even in the middle of the night or during the shortest break from work, as we can quickly use them to make food. That’s why it is important to make them last longer so that we don’t have to take the hassle of changing them every year. So, it is important to know how long do microwaves last eventually?

A microwave oven lasts around 10 years. With poor maintenance and regular use, it can last for a maximum of 5-7 years. However, it also depends on the usage of households. Large families might have to change their appliances more often. Still, following proper instructions can make microwaves last longer.

If you want to learn how long microwaves last and what to do to make them last longer, let me help you in that case. You will know everything about the longevity of microwaves through this article. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

How To Make Microwaves Last Longer?

Following proper instructions and guidelines can make microwaves last longer, like more than a decade. Some basic steps like proper cleaning, gentle use, avoiding metals, using pre-programmed cooking times, timely repair, and turning on the exhaust fan can save your microwave from significant damage.

The microwave is my savior, whether it’s for my two minutes -popcorn for a movie or hours of baking cakes for a party. It is always a handy tool. So, we need to take care of it to make it live longer with us. I’ll follow these simple instructions and repair my microwave on time. Also, stay away from the things that can shorten its life.

According to food safety guidelines, I follow this temperature table while cooking in the microwave. Using the proper temperature avoids burning and damage as well. Let’s have a look at the temperature table:

FoodsSafe Temperature (F)
Chicken185-190
Turkey185-190
Fresh Beef Medium160-165
Stuffing 160-165
Frozen Foods 160-165
Seafood and Fish 155-160
Fresh Vegetables  140-165
Duck 180-185
Reheating 160-165

It reduces the chances of damaging the microwave. Also, the guidelines help the microwave last longer than expected.

When To Repair Or Replace A Microwave?

A man repairing a microwave

Microwave ovens are the daily household equipment that we need to use the most. At some points, these tools need repairing as well. Sometimes, replacement is the best option when required. But the concern is, how would I know that my microwave needs repair service or a replacement?

Well, if I don’t know the age of my microwave, there are some signs I need to follow to know about the right time of repairing and replacement. I will discuss them so that it can help you to find out as well. Let’s get started-

Keypad Issues

The function buttons over the microwave are another powerful tool for it. However, if one or more switches are not responding on the microwave keypad, this problem can hamper the functions of a microwave.

It often happens because of the dirt layers on the keypad. Even after cleaning, if the buttons don’t work, I immediately consult the microwave repair service. So, it is another significant sign that your microwave needs repairing.

Timer Problem

Sometimes, the cooking timers of microwaves stop working correctly. Either the food cooks too quickly, or it takes a lot of time. Well, I can test if the microwave’s timer is working fine or not, just by using a bowl of water.

To check, first, I have to place a small bowl of water inside the microwave and set the timer for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, if the water is piping hot, I can consider the microwave working well. Otherwise, it’s time to replace the unit.

Door Sealing

When you feel that your microwave door seal is compromised, it is another sign you should repair or replace it.

The microwave door seal is one of the most important safety features. It is designed in such a way so that the radiation level remains low. If the door is not closing or working correctly, you should go ahead and repair the microwave.

Smell And Smoke

Any kind of smell, sparks, or smoke coming from the microwave signifies that something critical is going on. It is an emergency alarm. As soon as I see it in my microwave, I stop whatever I am doing and turn off the microwave switch immediately.

Burning smells and smoke mean that the microwave is failing. And it is best not to go back for repair, as the situation can turn into an explosion in the future. I would recommend replacing the microwave urgently.

Old Age

With typical usage, microwaves generally last for eight to ten years at maximum. That’s why, when my microwave marks the milestone of 10 years, it will be high time I replace it.

Heating Problems

This is quite similar and connected with the cooking timer problem. It’s like my microwave is on, and it’s working but not heating. It’s a widespread issue with microwaves. However, I can fix it on my own most of the time. You can also try.

If this heating problem occurs repetitively, then I would suggest replacing the microwave.

Odd Sounds

While cooking, microwaves generally make a gently humming sound when there is food inside. But sometimes, it starts to make louder noises like grinding, rattling, or buzzing noises. In this case, I immediately check the turntables and fan blades to see if there are any misalignments or any pieces of leftover food that have stuck.

In most cases, it can be resolved this way, but if it doesn’t stop making loud noises, I think there are some more significant issues. I recommend taking help from the microwave service. And if possible, get a new microwave instead of the old one.

What Shortens A Microwave’s Lifespan?

Microwaves can be a part of your life for a decade or more if you take good care of them. There are a few things you should not do with your microwave. It might shorten the longevity and work-power of the microwave. Do you want to know what these facts are that you should be wary of? Then follow along!

Slamming Microwave Door

Slamming or closing microwave doors may seem harmless or cool, but it hampers the microwave. Door sealing helps to keep the radiation level low inside the microwave. It is an essential tool.

Aggressively shutting or slamming the door will damage your microwave, and it will not be able to absorb the energy inside. And the output will not be good as well. I recommend closing the door gently and trying to treat your household tools carefully.

Neglecting Cleaning

Keeping the microwave clean is a very healthy and effective way to make it last longer. If I ignore cleaning, the dust layer will damage the keypad and other functions, and it will be broken soon.

Leaving switch on

Another important thing, not to run the microwave while it is empty. People often forget to switch off the microwave after using it. It hampers the microwave, and it will absorb its energy inside. It shortens microwave life.

Using The Wrong Circuit

Kitchen circuits function differently. Microwaves and ovens require unique circuit plans to run correctly. If I don’t set it that way, there might be a short circuit or electrical difficulties, ultimately damaging the microwave.

Check out this article to see if you need a dedicated circuit for your microwave.

Don’t Use Unsafe Containers

While using a microwave, it’s imperative to place your food in a microwave-friendly container. Otherwise, it will burn inside and damage the microwave.

Mainly, plastics and stainless steels are some unsafe materials that hamper microwaves enormously. However, you can get some microwave-safe plastic containers like these ones from Amazon.

Weight Limit

Based on the power of microwaves, there is a weight limit we have to follow while using them. It is vital not to cross the weight limit in microwaves. It pressurizes the microwaves and hampers the energy-flow system.

For different brands, the powers are different, and the weight limit is different as well. Here are some top brands mentioned in the table with their weight limits:
